Royal Caribbean has named retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Lori J. Robinson the official godmother of Legend of the Seas, with the ship’s naming ceremony scheduled for Veterans Day in Fort Lauderdale.
The ceremony will take place Nov. 11, 2026, after Legend of the Seas completes its debut summer in Europe and arrives in Florida. Robinson will take part in the maritime tradition of naming the ship and bestowing safekeeping upon Legend, its crew and future guests.
For Royal Caribbean, the Veterans Day ceremony will serve two purposes: officially welcoming its newest Icon Class ship to the United States while recognizing Robinson’s military career and the service of veterans, active-duty service members and military families.
Who Is Legend of the Seas Godmother Lori Robinson?
Robinson is a retired U.S. Air Force general whose 37-year military career included becoming the nation’s first female combatant commander. She also previously led the North American Aerospace Defense Command, known as NORAD, and U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM.
Royal Caribbean highlighted Robinson’s record of breaking barriers as well as her advocacy for people and families balancing careers and home life when announcing her selection as Legend’s godmother.
Robinson said being selected for the role was an honor and that holding the naming ceremony on Veterans Day made the occasion particularly meaningful. She also pointed to the importance of bringing people together and said she looks forward to recognizing generations of men and women who have served.
Legend of the Seas Naming Ceremony Set for Veterans Day
Royal Caribbean will officially welcome Legend of the Seas to the United States during the Nov. 11 naming ceremony in Fort Lauderdale.
Robinson will be joined by Royal Caribbean leaders, crew members and guests for the celebration. The event continues a longstanding maritime tradition in which a ship’s godmother takes part in its official naming and symbolically wishes the vessel, crew and passengers safekeeping.
Royal Caribbean President and CEO Michael Bayley said Robinson’s courage, determination and service made her an appropriate choice for the role. The company will also use the event to recognize military service among members of the Royal Caribbean community.
Legend Brings Icon Class to Fort Lauderdale
Legend of the Seas will arrive in Fort Lauderdale following its inaugural summer season in Europe. The move begins the next phase of the ship’s deployment, with Caribbean cruises departing from Florida.
The Icon Class ship will offer six-night Western Caribbean getaways and eight-night Southern Caribbean vacations. Southern Caribbean itineraries include Oranjestad, Aruba, and Willemstad, Curacao.
Every Legend of the Seas vacation from Fort Lauderdale will also visit Perfect Day at CocoCay in The Bahamas, Royal Caribbean’s private destination with beaches, a waterpark, pools and swim-up bars.
What’s Aboard Legend of the Seas?
Legend is designed around family vacations, with experiences spanning dining, entertainment, pools and high-energy attractions.
The ship features 28 dining options, including Royal Railway – Legend Station, an immersive dining experience, and Hollywoodland Supper Club, which offers a multi-course experience.
Guests will also have seven pools to choose from, along with Crown’s Edge, an attraction that combines elements of a skywalk and zip line 154 feet above the ocean.
Entertainment includes “America’s Got Talent LIVE on Legend of the Seas” and Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” The combination gives families options ranging from major stage productions and dining experiences to pools and thrill attractions during their Caribbean vacation.
A New Chapter for Legend of the Seas
The naming ceremony marks a transition for Legend of the Seas. After spending its first summer sailing in Europe, the ship will begin operating from Fort Lauderdale and introduce its Icon Class experiences to travelers sailing from South Florida.
Robinson’s role as godmother will become part of the ship’s identity as it begins that new chapter. Her selection also gives the Nov. 11 ceremony a direct connection to Veterans Day, with Royal Caribbean planning to recognize veterans, active-duty personnel and military families as part of the celebration.
Following the ceremony, Legend of the Seas will continue its Caribbean season with six- and eight-night itineraries from Fort Lauderdale, each including a visit to Perfect Day at CocoCay.
