Carnival Cruise Line has opened reservations for Carnival Tropicale, giving travelers their first opportunity to book the newest—and final—ship in the cruise line’s Excel class. The ship is scheduled to begin sailing from Galveston on April 15, 2028, adding a new option for Texas cruisers with voyages ranging from four to eight days.
Along with opening bookings, Carnival shared more details about what guests can expect aboard Carnival Tropicale. The ship will combine new family-focused attractions, an expanded water park, new dining concepts and entertainment spaces with itineraries visiting destinations across the Caribbean, The Bahamas and Mexico.
Carnival Tropicale Will Sail From Galveston in 2028
Carnival Tropicale will make Galveston its home beginning April 15, 2028. Carnival is emphasizing the ship’s Texas connection from the start: the Star of Texas will appear on the ship’s bow.
The new ship will offer four-, five-, six- and eight-day cruises. Its itineraries will connect travelers with several destinations in Carnival’s Paradise Collection, including Celebration Key, RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, Isla Tropicale and Puerta Maya. Other ports named by Carnival include Progreso and Nassau.
That range of cruise lengths gives Galveston travelers options for both shorter getaways and longer vacations aboard Carnival’s newest ship.
Carnival Tropicale Takes Shape in Germany
While reservations are now open, Carnival Tropicale is continuing its progression from concept to ship at MEYER WERFT’s shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.
Carnival Cruise Line and MEYER WERFT marked the booking launch with a western-themed construction celebration inspired by the ship’s future Texas home. Company and shipyard leaders wore cowboy-themed hard hats and western attire, while the shipyard team was served Texas-style barbecue.
Carnival Tropicale will be the fifth and final Excel-class ship built for Carnival Cruise Line. André Walter, who became CEO of MEYER WERFT GmbH on July 1, 2026, described the Excel ships as a successful series reflecting the shipbuilder’s longstanding relationship with Carnival.
Sunsation Point Puts Families at the Center
One of Carnival Tropicale’s biggest new features will be Sunsation Point, a multi-deck area designed around family activities that continue from daytime into the evening.
At its center will be Carnival WaterWorks Ultra, which Carnival describes as its most family-friendly water park at sea. The attraction will include six waterslides, with Carnival naming SunSoaker, Turning Tides and Racing Currents among them. Splash areas will provide options for younger cruisers as well.
The surrounding activities extend beyond the water park. Carnival has announced several indoor and outdoor attractions for the area:
- Fairway 66 Mini Golf, a redesigned course inspired by Route 66
- Sports courts
- Treehouse Adventure Trail with netted pathways and obstacles
- The Vault Retrocade, combining retro games with newer gaming experiences
Sunsation Point won’t shut down when the sun goes down. Carnival says the area will feature special evening activities and extended water park hours, creating another option for families looking for things to do later in the day.
Three New Dining Concepts Are Coming
Carnival Tropicale will also introduce a collection of dining concepts called The Next Course, with menus drawing inspiration from different cuisines and regions.
Uku Lei Lei will feature Hawaiian-inspired food with Asian influences, while Fetaccine will combine Greek and Italian flavors. Emeril’s Coastal Seafood will focus on seafood inspired by America’s coastlines and is being developed in partnership with Carnival Chief Culinary Officer Chef Emeril Lagasse.
The three concepts give future Tropicale guests an early look at how Carnival plans to distinguish the ship’s dining lineup from other experiences in the Excel class.
More Carnival Tropicale Details Are Still Coming
Carnival is also developing new entertainment experiences and exclusive spaces for Tropicale inspired by the golden era of show business. The cruise line has not yet provided full details about those experiences and says additional information will be announced in the months ahead.
For cruisers considering a future sailing from Texas, the biggest development for now is simple: Carnival Tropicale is officially bookable. With an April 2028 debut from Galveston, multiple itinerary lengths and several newly announced family and dining experiences, travelers can now begin deciding whether Carnival’s final Excel-class ship belongs in their future cruise plans.
