Royal Caribbean is moving forward with plans for Mahahual K’iin, a new community center designed to give residents of Mahahual, Quintana Roo, Mexico, a larger and more centrally located place for education, recreation, cultural activities and community gatherings.
For cruise travelers who visit Mahahual as a port of call, the project offers a look at how Royal Caribbean says it is investing in the community beyond the cruise experience. The company, which operates the Port of Costa Maya, says the new center is part of its ongoing commitment to supporting practical initiatives in Mahahual.
A New Community Hub for Mahahual
Royal Caribbean says the new Mahahual K’iin Community Center will build on a community space that has served Mahahual since 2014. The new facility is planned for a more centrally located site along Carretera Cafetal-Mahahual, placing the center at the heart of town.
The name Mahahual K’iin means “the sun of Mahahual.” According to Royal Caribbean, the name was proposed and selected through a community vote, reflecting the company’s emphasis on creating the project with local residents rather than simply developing a facility for the community.
The expanded center is intended to provide more capacity for activities that already play an important role in the community, including education, recreation, cultural programming and local gatherings.
What the New Center Is Planned to Include
The project is designed around flexible spaces that can be used for a variety of community needs. Indoor areas are planned for workshops, educational activities and community-led events, giving residents places to gather and participate in programs throughout the year.
Outdoor recreation will also be a major part of the new center. Royal Caribbean says plans include a new soccer pitch along with basketball and volleyball courts.
Those additions are intended to give children, families and other residents additional opportunities for recreation while expanding the center’s role as a gathering place for Mahahual.
Building on an Existing Community Resource
The new facility is not starting from scratch when it comes to community programming. Royal Caribbean says the existing center has hosted workshops and welcomed volunteers, children and families through programs focused on learning, creativity, wellness and community connection.
With the new center, the company says Mahahual will have expanded space and capacity to continue those efforts. The goal is to create a facility that can accommodate a broader range of activities while remaining centered on the needs of local residents.
Royal Caribbean’s Commitment to Mahahual
Jason Liberty, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, said the project reflects the company’s desire to support communities where its business operates. Royal Caribbean says it will continue working with Mahahual residents, community leaders and local authorities as the project moves forward.
Senaida Gómez, director of the community center, is also involved in the initiative. The project is positioned as part of a broader effort to support community well-being, environmental care and local opportunity in Mahahual.
Royal Caribbean’s relationship with Mahahual extends beyond the community center. The company says its ongoing work in the area includes supporting practical local initiatives as the owner and operator of the Port of Costa Maya.
When Will Construction Begin?
Construction of the new Mahahual K’iin Community Center is expected to begin once the necessary permits and approvals have been obtained. Royal Caribbean has not provided a completed opening date in the announcement.
For travelers visiting Mahahual on a Royal Caribbean cruise, the project is something to watch as the community center develops. While the facility is intended primarily for residents, its planned location and expanded programming are part of the cruise line’s broader presence in the destination.
