Carnival Cruise Line has taken cruise viewing to a whole new level, giving guests aboard Carnival Legend a rare opportunity to watch a total solar eclipse from the open ocean. The Aug. 12 event marked Carnival’s first-ever solar eclipse cruise and became the signature experience of an 11-day Carnival Journeys sailing.
Carnival Legend departed Dover, England, on Aug. 9 for a voyage visiting destinations in Spain, Portugal, Belgium and France. But on Aug. 12, the focus shifted from the destinations to the sky as guests gathered on deck while the ship sailed through the path of totality.
Carnival Legend Sailed Directly Through the Path of Totality
Being at sea gave passengers aboard Carnival Legend a particularly memorable setting for the eclipse. As the ship traveled through the path of totality, guests were positioned beneath the moon’s shadow as it passed in front of the sun.
Carnival provided special eclipse viewing glasses for all guests, allowing passengers to safely watch the celestial event from the ship. The cruise line also incorporated special eclipse programming into the sailing, with themed entertainment, beverage offerings and other activities continuing throughout the voyage.
For cruisers, the experience demonstrates one of the distinctive possibilities of a longer itinerary: the ship itself can become part of the event. Rather than simply visiting destinations, this Carnival Journeys sailing was planned around an unusual experience that took place while the ship was at sea.
What Are Carnival Journeys?
The eclipse sailing is part of Carnival Journeys, Carnival Cruise Line’s collection of longer itineraries designed to give guests more time to explore destinations while also offering special experiences onboard.
The Carnival Legend voyage combines several European destinations with a dedicated eclipse experience, giving passengers both port visits and an event that could only be experienced from a specific location at a specific time.
That combination is particularly relevant for travelers who enjoy cruises that go beyond the traditional weeklong vacation. Carnival’s eclipse sailings show how the cruise line is using longer voyages to build itineraries around unique experiences as well as destinations.
Carnival Plans Three Solar Eclipse Cruises in 2027
The Aug. 12 sailing aboard Carnival Legend will not be Carnival’s only opportunity for guests to experience an eclipse at sea. Carnival Cruise Line plans three solar eclipse cruises in 2027, including another Carnival Journeys voyage.
Carnival Firenze: February 2027
Carnival Firenze will depart Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Feb. 2, 2027, on a 16-day Carnival Journeys voyage. The itinerary includes Rio de Janeiro and Maceio in Brazil, along with Grenada, Martinique and St. Maarten.
The sailing is positioned for guests to witness an annular solar eclipse on Feb. 6, giving passengers another opportunity to combine a Carnival cruise with a major celestial event.
Carnival Sunshine: August 2027
Carnival Sunshine is scheduled to depart Barcelona, Spain, on July 25, 2027, for a 10-day Mediterranean voyage positioned for the Aug. 2 eclipse.
The sailing gives travelers another chance to make an eclipse the centerpiece of a Mediterranean cruise while visiting destinations during the voyage.
Carnival Miracle: July 2027
Carnival Miracle will depart Dover, England, on July 29, 2027, for an 11-day Carnival Journeys sailing. The voyage will feature a dedicated day at sea for eclipse viewing.
Eclipses Add a Different Dimension to Cruising
Carnival’s first eclipse cruise illustrates how cruise lines can use a ship’s mobility to put travelers in position for rare events. In this case, Carnival Legend was at sea when guests gathered to watch the total solar eclipse from the path of totality.
