Carnival Cruise Line is taking its sustainability efforts beyond the ship itself with a new program designed to give unwanted shoes a second life. The cruise line has partnered with Miami-based Sneaker Impact to launch a shoe recycling initiative across its U.S. fleet, making Carnival the first cruise line to partner with the organization.
The program collects unclaimed shoes left onboard along with footwear donated by guests and crew. Those shoes are then sent to Sneaker Impact’s Miami facility, where each pair is evaluated and sorted to determine the most sustainable next step.
For cruise travelers, the initiative offers a simple way to turn something they no longer need into an opportunity for reuse, recycling and waste reduction.
What Happens to Shoes Collected on Carnival Ships?
Once footwear reaches Sneaker Impact’s Miami facility, its proprietary sorting system determines whether the shoes can be reused or whether their materials should be recovered through recycling.
Shoes that remain in good condition are made available to small business owners in developing countries. The footwear can then be sold to generate income while also helping provide access to affordable shoes in communities where that access may be limited.
Shoes that are no longer suitable to wear are not simply discarded. Sneaker Impact separates and recovers their materials so they can be repurposed into products including athletic surfaces, yoga mats and footwear components.
More Than 500 Pairs Diverted in One Month
Carnival says the program is already demonstrating how relatively small collections can add up across a cruise fleet. In July, just five Carnival ships offloaded more than 500 pairs of shoes for the initiative, keeping that footwear out of landfills.
Benton Lobo, vice president of compliance and environmental operations at Carnival Cruise Line, said the company sees the potential to give new life to about 50,000 pairs of shoes when the program is scaled across its full fleet.
That projected figure represents the potential impact Carnival sees from expanding the initiative throughout its U.S. fleet. The July collection provides an early indication of how much footwear the program can divert when collections take place across multiple ships.
Guests and Crew Can Participate
The new initiative is not limited to shoes that are left behind after a cruise. Carnival says guests and crew members can also donate unwanted footwear, giving passengers another way to participate in the cruise line’s sustainability efforts.
That distinction is important because the program combines two sources of footwear: unclaimed shoes found onboard and shoes intentionally donated by guests and crew. Instead of sending those unwanted pairs toward a landfill, Carnival is routing them through Sneaker Impact for evaluation, reuse or material recovery.
Sneaker Impact CEO Moe Hachem said the organization is focused on making it easy for Carnival guests to give unwanted footwear a second life through reuse and responsible recycling.
A Partnership Focused on a Circular Economy
Carnival describes the initiative as part of its broader effort to reduce waste and advance circular economy practices. Rather than treating used products as waste at the end of their initial use, the program looks for ways to keep footwear useful through reuse or recover materials for other products.
The partnership also fits into Carnival Corporation’s broader sustainability strategy, which extends across all eight of its cruise brands. Carnival Cruise Line says the new shoe initiative is another step in continuing that work.
A Small Change That Can Add Up
For cruise guests, donating an old pair of shoes may seem like a small action. Carnival’s experience in July suggests that those individual contributions can become much more significant when combined across multiple ships.
The more than 500 pairs collected from five ships in one month illustrate the potential of a fleetwide program. Carnival believes the initiative could ultimately give new life to approximately 50,000 pairs of shoes.
For now, the program provides Carnival guests and crew with another way to participate directly in the cruise line’s sustainability efforts, while giving collected footwear a path toward reuse or recycling instead of the landfill.
