Carnival Cruise Line has marked a significant milestone in its maritime history with the appointment of Daniela Gargiulo as the company’s first female Staff Captain. Gargiulo was officially promoted on Aug. 5 aboard Carnival Adventure in Sydney, where she will serve as second-in-command to Captain Francesco Bencivenga.

The promotion places Gargiulo in a senior operational role overseeing marine operations, safety and crew leadership, while also representing a notable career milestone after 13 years with Carnival Cruise Line.

Daniela Gargiulo’s Carnival Career Began in 2013

Gargiulo’s path to becoming Staff Captain began when she joined Carnival Cruise Line as a Deck Cadet in 2013. Since then, she has steadily advanced through the company’s ranks while building a career at sea.

She joined Carnival Adventure last year and is now beginning her new role aboard the ship as it operates year-round from Sydney.

Her interest in a maritime career started even earlier. Gargiulo enrolled in a nautical school in Italy at age 14, beginning a lifelong connection to the ocean and the maritime industry.

A New Leadership Role Aboard Carnival Adventure

As Staff Captain, Gargiulo serves as Captain Bencivenga’s second-in-command. Her responsibilities include overseeing marine operations, safety and crew leadership, along with other duties associated with the senior position.

Carnival celebrated her appointment with a special ceremony aboard Carnival Adventure on Aug. 5. The ceremony took place as the ship was returning to Sydney from the South Pacific, bringing the historic promotion into focus for the crew and leadership onboard.

Captain Bencivenga said he was proud to work alongside Gargiulo and highlighted the importance of her appointment for future female leaders in the maritime industry.

What the Milestone Means for Cruise Travelers

For Carnival passengers, the Staff Captain is one of the key leadership positions behind the scenes of a cruise. The role has direct responsibility for areas such as marine operations, safety and crew leadership, making it an important part of the team responsible for the ship’s operation.

Gargiulo’s promotion also provides cruise travelers with a glimpse into the career paths available within the cruise industry. Her progression from Deck Cadet to Staff Captain over 13 years demonstrates the advancement possible through a long-term career at sea.

Gargiulo said the promotion was an incredible honor and expressed pride in becoming the first woman in Carnival Cruise Line history to hold the Staff Captain position. She also highlighted the opportunities Carnival’s career pathways can provide to both men and women seeking careers at sea.

Carnival Adventure Sails Year-Round From Sydney

Gargiulo’s new position comes as she begins this chapter of her career aboard Carnival Adventure in Australia. The ship sails year-round from Sydney and carries more than 2,600 guests and 1,100 crew members.

The appointment adds a historic moment to the ship’s ongoing operations while placing Gargiulo in a leadership role aboard one of Carnival’s ships serving the Australian market.

For Carnival Cruise Line, the promotion is both a personal career achievement for Gargiulo and a milestone in the company’s maritime leadership history. For the cruise industry more broadly, it highlights the growing opportunities for women to advance into senior shipboard positions.
