Step 1: Booking Your Carnival Cruise (Way Easier Than You Think)

From experience, I would recommend Port Canaveral for your first cruise if you are local or able to fly in. That port runs like a well oiled machine and is unmatched by any other Carnival embarkation port!

Choose Your Ship
Carnival ships range from “fun and classic” to “holy wow, this feels brand new.” Newer ships = more food, flashier entertainment, and nicer rooms. Older ships = cheaper fares and still a blast! I prefer the newer ships for all the food options as well as better entertainment but you really can’t go wrong with any ship! Carnival keeps their ships updated and adds food options from time to time to all ships.
Pro tip: You’re rarely in your room anyway—pick based on budget and itinerary.

If you’re torn—this is usually the fan favorite. But remember once you try a balcony room it is hard to cruise in an ocean view room and especially an interior room!

Add the Fun Stuff (Optional but Tempting)
Before you sail, you can add:
- Airport Transfers – Recommended if your party is 2 or less (otherwise you might check Uber/Lyft prices to Port)
- Book from Airport to Cruise Port and/or Cruise Port to Airport
- Cruise Cash – Not Recommended – Cruise Cash is non-refundable and any unused credits will be forfeited
- Drink Packages – Recommended only if you drink 5 or more drinks EACH day of your cruise
- Dreams Studio – Expensive but worth it if you plan on doing a photo shoot with your family/friends
- Excursions – Recommended for most of the ports of your first cruise
- Carnival excursions ensure you will not be left if the excursion is late getting back to the ship
- Faster to the Fun – Not Recommended for first cruise
- Fly2Fun – Carnival books your flight – never did this – cannot recommend or not recommend
- Gifts and Stateroom Decor – Recommended if celebrating a birthday or anniversary
- In Room Food and Beverages – Recommended for water, soda, and alcohol if you are not getting a drink package
- Internet Plans – Recommended if you are not planning to disconnect while on your cruise
- Pixels Photo Packages – Recommended if you plan on purchasing photos taken during your cruise
- Spa and Salon – Recommended if you are looking to pamper yourself or your partner
- Specialty Dining – Recommended if you want to splurge on a great dining experience while on your cruise
Booking ahead usually saves money—and decision fatigue onboard.
Step 2: You’re On the Ship! Now What?
Embarkation Day = Vacation Mode Activated
Once you board:
- The party starts immediately
- Lunch is open (yes, even before your room)
- Your stateroom is ready by early afternoon, usually at or before 1:30pm
- Muster drill? Easy. Visit the area located on your boarding pass and Sign and Sail Card (room key). It will be a letter and a number, like B4.
From there, you explore, eat, sip something cold, and wonder why you haven’t tried cruising before.

Food is a BIG reason people love Carnival—and most of it is already included.
Included Eats (Unlimited, No Judgment)
You’ll have access to:
- BlueIguana Cantina – Tacos, burritos, breakfast magic
- Deli & Salad Stations
- FroYo and Ice Cream
- Guy’s Burger Joint – Legendary burgers (shown in the image above)
- Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse (included on select ships)
- Lido Buffet – Quick bites, comfort food, variety galore
- Main Dining Room – Sit-down meals, rotating menus, actual waitstaff
- Pasta Bella (select ships at lunch in Cucina del Capitano)
- Pizza – Open until midnight
Translation: You will not starve. Ever.
Pro Tip: Skip Guy’s Burger Joint the buffet on embarkation day. Check the Hub App to see what sitdown restaurants are open. One of my favorites is Pasta Bella (on select ships) located in Cucina del Capitano. It is a create your own pasta bowl venue. Add as much as you want. View the menu here.
Specialty Dining (A Little Fancy, Very Worth It)
Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse
Feeling bougie? Carnival’s specialty restaurants cost extra but are perfect for date night or celebrations:
- Bonsai Sushi / Teppanyaki – Dinner and a show
- Cucina del Capitano – Cozy Italian comfort food
- Emeril’s Bistro (select ships) – Southern flair done right
- Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse | Brewhouse (specialty on select ships)
- Steakhouse – Fancy vibes, excellent steaks
Pros: Better atmosphere, elevated food
Cons: Extra cost (usually $15–$50)
Most first-timers try at least one—and don’t regret it. The Steakhouse is my go to on any ship! Bonsai Teppanyaki is also a great choice!
Room Service
Several Items are included from 6:00am through 10:00am.

- Cereal (Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Corn Flakes, Lucky Charms, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Cheerios)

Carnival Theme Nights — The Real Reason Your Suitcase Is Overweight
The daytime is fun… but the real magic happens at night. When the sun goes down, the ship transforms into a floating theme party, and suddenly everyone you saw in flip-flops at breakfast is dressed to impress.
Here are some of the theme nights you can expect on nearly every sailing:
Cruise Elegant
This is Carnival’s formal night — suits, cocktail dresses, staircase photos, and a special dinner menu (hello, lobster). It’s classy… until the late-night pizza run.
80s Rock-n-Glow Party
Neon everything. Glow sticks. Big hair. The atrium turns into a dance party time machine and nobody remembers their bedtime.
White Night
An all-white party that looks straight out of a music video. Just maybe avoid red sauce at dinner.
Why You Should Participate
You don’t have to dress up — but you’ll have way more fun if you do. Theme nights are where cruise friendships are made, dance floors stay packed, and the vacation energy really kicks in.
So pack your formal wear. Bring the white outfit. Toss in all your neon wear.

Final First-Time Carnival Cruiser Tips

- Do NOT fly in the day of your cruise – book a hotel for the night before your cruise
- Check your account statement often so there are no financial surprises at the end of your cruise, especially if you play in the casino
- Don’t overpack—casual is king
- Pack medications, phone chargers, sunscreen, etc in your carryon bag.
- Try everything at least once, especially the Carnival Melting Cake in the main dining room
- Schedule downtime (yes, it’s allowed)
- Expect to start planning your next cruise before this one ends
